Dynamo outlasts United despite lengthy delay

07/24/2008 - Washington, D.C. (Soccer Betting) - Brian Mullan and Brian Ching scored goals to help the Houston Dynamo to a 2-0 win over D.C. United on Wednesday in a match that featured a rain delay of nearly three hours.

The game was originally supposed to take place on June 4, but was postponed 15 minutes into the match because of rain. It was rescheduled for Tuesday July 22, but also had to be postponed due to a power outage. On Wednesday, the team's completed 54 minutes of play before torrential rain and lightning forced the contest to be stopped, but the game did eventually resume and Houston held on to put an end to United's four-game winning streak in MLS play.

The result takes Houston into a tie for second place in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Galaxy, while D.C.'s loss keeps them in fourth place in the East.

Brad Davis assisted on both goals for the Dynamo, who won for the first time in their last five games.

Houston was in control of the game from the start and they tested D.C. goalkeeper Zach Wells early and often.

The Dynamo's Craig Waibel caused the first anxious moment when his poorly- struck cross nearly snuck past Wells, forcing the keeper to tip the ball over the net.

Ching called Wells into action in the 10th minute with a quick turnaround shot from the top of the box that forced a diving stop, and Dwayne De Rosario sent a hard shot skipping past the left post from 35 yards.

The hosts had survived the pressure up to that the point, but Houston struck in the 20th minute to take the lead.

Davis took a pass 30 yards from goal and played a good ball to Mullan inside the box on the right. The midfielder then cut it back to avoid a defender and he slammed a shot into the upper left corner past a helpless Wells.

The Houston attack put together another nice build up minutes later that almost put them ahead by two goals. A quick pass was made from Geoff Cameron to Mullan and he then played a short pass to De Rosario, who was in on goal. However, Wells came off his line and got a piece of the shot, deflecting it past the left post.

The home side managed little offense in the first half, and despite being outplayed, they only trailed by one goal at the break.

Houston continued to hold the advantage early in the second half with Mullan testing Wells once more, but then the rain and lightning came, forcing the two teams to the dressing room.

The long break didn't seem to bother the Dynamo too much and they were denied by the woodwork in the 65th minute in an effort to increase the lead.

A corner was swung into the box and it caused a scramble in front of the United net. Cameron ended up getting a foot on the ball and he poked it towards goal, only for the ball to come back off the post.

Clyde Simms created a rare chance for D.C. in the 70th minute when he drilled a shot from 20 yards on target, forcing a diving stop from Houston's Pat Onstad, but Houston doubled its lead with 10 minutes to play when a Davis free kick was nodded home by Ching.

Gonzalo Martinez was then sent off in the 83rd minute and there was no way back into the game for United.

Albert Pujols to be This Year's Home Run Champ Says Online Sportsbook

Barry Bonds is a 50-1 long shot to be this year's home run champ odds.  The favorite to be this year's home run champ is none other than Albert Pujols, however.

Now that Barry Bonds is signed and in Giants camp, it is on to his pursuit of all of sports most prestigious records: the all-time home run mark. Bonds sits just 21 homers shy of tying Hank Aaron for the career mark at 755. Word out of Giants’ camp is that Bonds is the healthiest he has been in a few years. Bonds is just two seasons removed from his injury riddled 2005 campaign where he played in only 14 games and hit only 5 home runs. He did come back last year and had a solid season hitting .270 with 26 bombs. All eyes will be on Bonds this spring and summer not only because of his home run chase but his highly publicized steroid abuse allegations. If and when Bonds breaks the record, he surely will not get the positive attention one should for breaking a record that was once thought of as “unbreakable”. Despite Bonds decent season last year, he is just 50-1 at MySportsbook.com to lead the MLB in long balls this season.

Not surprisingly, the favorites to go deep the most times this season are Albert Pujols 5-1, Ryan Howard 6-1, David Ortiz 8-1 and Alex Rodriguez 12-1. With 49 homers, Pujols finished second in the National League behind Howard (58). Pujols is considered the favorite due to the consistent power numbers that he has posted since breaking into the league in 2001. Also one must consider the fact that he played in 16 fewer games then Howard did due to an injury. Howard smashed 58 homers in his first complete season of big league play en route to the National League MVP odds award. He silenced his critics by successfully hitting left-handed pitching. Howard also displayed the ability to use his power to the opposite field. Two attributes which should keep Howard amongst the league leaders in long balls for years to come. From the American League representatives, David Ortiz leads the field. Ortiz was second in the majors last year with 54 home runs. Except for 1999 when he only played in 10 games, Ortiz has improved on his home run numbers each year he has been in the majors (1997).
