Johnson, D'Backs finish season against Rox in desert

09/28/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to end the 2008 campaign with a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies when both clubs wrap up their seasons today at Chase Field.

Arizona, which was swept by Colorado in the NLCS last year, once sat comfortably atop the National League West standings, but a late-season collapse guaranteed it early vacation plans.

The D'Backs, though, have won the first two installments of this series and recorded a 6-4 triumph on Saturday. Stephen Drew ripped a two-run single to highlight a three-run eighth inning and Adam Dunn homered for Arizona, which has won five of its last eight games.

Dunn has hit at least 40 homers in five consecutive seasons.

Starter and NL Cy Young Award candidate Brandon Webb was aiming for his major league-leading 23rd win of the season, but did not factor in the outcome after he was reached for four runs and six hits in seven innings of work. He did, however, collect a two-run double at the plate and finished the year 22-7 with a 3.30 ERA. Brandon Lyon tossed a scoreless eighth to get the win.

Taking the hill for Arizona in the season finale will be veteran Randy Johnson, who is 10-10 with a 4.11 earned run average in 29 starts. Johnson is 0-2 in his last seven outings and dropped his most recent start on September 23 at St. Louis, allowing five runs in six innings of a 7-4 loss. Johnson hasn't won since beating Colorado on August 12, when he limited the Rockies to two runs in six frames in a 4-2 victory. He is 2-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two outings against the Rox this season.

The 45-year-old left-hander, who has 294 career wins, owns a 17-7 mark with a 2.42 ERA in 26 lifetime matchups with Colorado.

The Rockies represented the National League in the 2007 World Series, but will miss out on postseason play this time around.

jIn Saturday's loss, Ryan Spilborghs finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Colorado, which has dropped four of its last seven games. Starter Glendon Rusch gave up three runs on six hits in just four innings while Manuel Corpas was saddled the loss after he was reached for three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Ubaldo Jimenez gets the nod for the Rockies on Sunday and he is 12-12 with a 4.13 earned run average in 33 starts. Jimenez has won two straight and three of his last four starts, including a September 23 performance against San Francisco in which he allowed three runs over six frames in a 9-4 win.

Jimenez is 0-1 with a 3.79 ERA in three career starts against Arizona. The righty last faced the D'Backs and Johnson on August 12 and allowed four runs and 11 hits through six innings to absorb the defeat.

Arizona is 14-3 versus the Rockies this season, with a 7-1 mark at Chase Field.
